Enbridge Gas Distribution

Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., which is wholly owned by Enbridge Inc., began life as The Consumers' Gas Company Ltd., and has been distributing natural gas to customers for more than 155 years.

Enbridge Gas Distribution provides service to customers in the City of Toronto and the greater Toronto areas of Peel, York and Durham regions, as well as the Niagara Peninsula, Ottawa, Brockville, Peterborough, Barrie and many other Ontario communities. In 2006, Enbridge Gas Distribution distributed an average of over 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day (approximately 408 billion cubic feet for the full year).

For years, Enbridge Gas Distribution operated as an integrated, regulated utility, delivering natural gas to customers, supplying heating and related appliances, and providing maintenance and other services. Then in October 1999, Enbridge Gas Distribution (then known as Enbridge Consumers Gas) unbundled a number of its business activities relating to retail energy services (which were subsequently sold in May 2002). This enabled Enbridge Gas Distribution to focus on its core gas distribution operations.

Enbridge Gas Distribution, through its wholly owned subsidiary, St. Lawrence Gas Company, Inc. - an Enbridge Company, also serves Massena, Ogdensburg, Potsdam and surrounding areas in northern New York State.

Other related assets consist of Gazifère Inc. - an Enbridge Company and Niagara Gas Transmission Ltd. - an Enbridge Company. Gazifere is a gas distribution utility located in southwestern Quebec serving the communities of Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, Masson-Anger and Buckingham. Niagara Gas provides transmission services to Enbridge Gas Distribution, Gazifere, St. Lawrence and Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (an unrelated company).

The gas distribution utility business of Enbridge Gas Distribution is regulated by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), its principal regulator which regulates various aspects of the Issuer's utility operations in Ontario with similar regulation applying to St. Lawrence under the New York State Public Service Commission. Gazifere is regulated under the La Regie de L'energie in Quebec.

Enbridge Inc. purchased an 85% interest in The Consumers' Gas Company Ltd. and other related assets in June 1994 for $1,203.8 million. In December 1996, Enbridge acquired the remaining 15% of the common shares for $248.6 million.
