Enbridge believes that to achieve a consistently strong environmental performance – a key indicator of success – we must set clear goals, find new and better ways to operate, stay on top of developing trends, and constantly challenge ourselves to improve.

Enbridge’s long term support and leadership role in Canada’s voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting initiative continues with this year’s submission to the Canadian GHG Challenge Registry©. This year’s report aggregates our GHG emissions from all Canadian operations for which we have operational control.

In 2006 we set a voluntary target for our Canadian business units to reduce our direct GHG emissions from our 1990 baseline year by 20 per cent by 2010. Based on our current analysis, we project that we will almost certainly meet our 2010 reduction target. Since 1990 we have already achieved a significant 27 per cent reduction in direct GHG emissions from our own facilities. These actions are examples of best industry practices and enhance our operating performance and competitiveness, generating both energy and cost savings.

Enbridge has been a long time advocate of the important role that voluntary efforts can play in delivering GHG reductions and in the public reporting of these initiatives. We have been consistently reporting our GHG emissions since 1995. These reports can be found on the Canadian Standards Association website.

Following are some of the quantitative and qualitative targets that will help us further build our reputation for environmental leadership.

  • Invest in wind power and new energy technology to further our CSR strategy and capitalize on opportunities for economically attractive growth in the emerging energy sector.
  • Reduce our Canadian direct greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) to 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2010.
  • Expand GHG reporting to include all our international operations and sponsored investments in the United States where we have operational control over CSR policies and procedures.
  • Prevent all spills and leaks from our energy transportation and distribution systems.
  • Conduct regular emergency response drills and simulations to test and improve procedures, and strive for continuous improvement in our understanding and management of security best practices.
  • Develop an internal GHG data management system to allow us better to track and manage our GHG supporting data capture program.
