Environmental GRI Performance Indicators
EN5 – Energy saved due to conservation and efficiency improvements.
Our Performance
We strive to reduce energy use through efficiency improvements and conservation efforts.
Increased electricity use in Liquids Pipelines
In 2007, our electricity use on our Liquids Pipelines system was 3,769 gigawatt hours. While our throughput on the system was 3.4 per cent higher than in 2006, our energy use was up only 3.1 per cent, indicating that we are doing slightly more while using less energy.
Optimizing natural flow rates for oil pipelines
As products in our pipelines and power contracts change, we continually review natural flow rates for our Liquids Pipelines system. These rates are designed to optimize pipeline operating pressures to match the equipment and the types of liquids that are transported. By applying these rates to the pipeline, we lower fuel consumption and reduce maintenance requirements.
Managing energy use at Enbridge Gas Distribution
Enbridge Gas Distribution (EGD) carries out a comprehensive energy management program to minimize energy use. At its Toronto head office, EGD has replaced aging equipment with new technology, achieving significant efficiency gains as a result. Since 1994, it has improved its lighting, information technology, and heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
The pursuit of a green building is not only an environmentally sound practice, but results in a better quality building with significantly lower operating costs. In 2007 alone, as a result of the energy saving improvements is has made since 1994, EGD’s head office has saved 6,043,451 kWh, which equals $491,502. EGD’s efforts have reduced the building’s electricity consumption by 51.9 per cent, and resulted in an electricity bill that is 19 per cent lower than its 1988 bill. Since 1994, EGD has saved $4,928,502.
