Enbridge supports Project Zero
Enbridge Gas Distribution is helping to make Toronto homes safer by supporting Project Zero, a public education program developed by Toronto Fire Services to eliminate residential fire deaths.
Fire inspectors will go door-to-door to ensure there are working smoke alarms on every level and at least one carbon monoxide alarm in every home they visit. Homes that lack the proper detection equipment will receive a temporary unit. Homeowners will have a week to install a permanent smoke alarm.
Enbridge is donating $20,000 towards the purchase of 550 combination carbon monoxide-smoke alarms to be installed temporarily during inspections.
Janet Holder, President, Enbridge Gas Distribution, says supporting Project Zero makes sense given the Company's long history of supporting community safety.
“When the utility was founded in Toronto 160 years ago, our directors were not just local businessmen—most were also active members of the city's volunteer fire brigade,” Janet says.
Enbridge supports emergency first-responders through the recently launched Enbridge Safe Communities program. Project Zero is the first initiative to receive funds through the Safe Communities program.
In addition to supporting programs, Enbridge regularly communicates safety messages regarding carbon monoxide and detection equipment in our monthly customer bills, website and advertisements.
All Ontario dwellings must lawfully have a properly maintained smoke alarm installed on every level and in sleeping areas. Toronto also has a by-law that requires all homes, where there is a fuel fired appliance, to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm.
