Enbridge Inc. today responded to the release by the Government of Alberta of its Climate Leadership Plan.
“We’re encouraged and supportive of the Climate Leadership Plan announced today by Premier Rachel Notley and Environment Minister Shannon Phillips; in fact we think it’s a turning point for our province and our industry,” said Al Monaco, President and Chief Executive Officer of Enbridge Inc. “The plan lays the groundwork for Alberta to become a leader in addressing climate change, while acknowledging the need to maintain the competitiveness of Alberta’s energy sector and its contribution to our provincial and national economies.”
“The visible support of leading Canadian energy companies for the government’s plan, standing together with environmental organizations and First Nations, is also a major step forward and a great signal to people on all sides of the energy issue that change is happening,” said Mr. Monaco. “For too long, we’ve been in a polarized debate about energy. This new collaborative approach proves that we can find common ground to protect our environment while ensuring we meet our collective need for energy in a sustainable way.
“The concrete steps outlined today by industry, government and environmental organizations will be key to developing much-needed energy infrastructure investments with greater certainty,” Mr. Monaco added.
Mr. Monaco noted that Enbridge is pleased with the government’s move towards a policy framework that sets targets for renewable energy. Enbridge currently has interests in nearly one quarter of the installed wind capacity in Alberta, part of the company’s nearly $5 billion renewable power portfolio.
