System Profile & Statistics
Pipeline System History
Enbridge Pipelines Inc. was originally incorporated as Interprovincial Pipe Line (IPL) shortly after the discovery of oil at Leduc #1 in 1947. The original pipeline was built to carry oil from the Leduc, Alberta oil fields to Regina, Saskatchewan, and the line was quickly extended from Regina to Superior, Wisconsin. Construction of the main pipeline from Edmonton to Superior began in November 1949. On October 4, 1950, the system was in full operation. The first oil reached Superior on December 5, 1950. In 1953, the pipeline was extended from Superior to Sarnia, Ontario.
