Pipeline System History

In the years leading to 1985, the system was extended to include Port Credit, Ontario, Chicago, Illinois, and Montreal, Quebec. In 1985, IPL completed construction of an 870-kilometre pipeline from Norman Wells, Northwest Territories to Zama, Alberta. It is the first pipeline to be constructed through permafrost in Canada's north

In 1994, the Capacity Expansion program added a new line to the system between Hardisty, Alberta and Clearbrook, Minnesota. Since 1995, Enbridge has undertaken several programs to further increase system capacity. The System Expansion Project I (SEP I) increased capacity by 70,000 barrels per day. SEP II increased capacity by a further 100,000 barrels per day.

After 49 years of growth and success, the Interprovincial Pipe Line name was changed as part of the introduction of the Enbridge master brand in 1998.

The Terrace Expansion Project was completed in early 2004. Terrace is a phased development that added 520,000 barrels per day of heavy crude capacity, with a net system capacity increase (after allowing for anticipated declines in light crude oil) of 350,000 barrels per day.
