Enbridge’s pipeline system is an extensive network of buried pipelines and aboveground facilities such as storage tankage, pumping and compressor stations. The system crosses thousands of properties as it travels through Canada.

A strip of land usually about 18 metres (60 feet) wide containing one or more pipelines is known as the pipeline right-of-way (ROW). The ROW enables workers to gain access for inspection, maintenance, testing or emergencies. It also identifies an area that restricts certain activities to protect the public, landowners and their families, and Enbridge Pipelines.

Understanding the Right-of-Way

While permanent pipeline markers are located at roads, railways and other intervals along the ROW, these show only the approximate location of the buried pipelines. The depth and location of the pipelines vary within the ROW. The ROW exists in many kinds of ecosystems from river crossings and cultivated fields to sub-Arctic tundra and urban areas. Because of this, there is no distinct "look" to the ROW.

Understanding the Safety Zone

In addition to the ROW where the pipeline is located, Canada’s National Energy Board has established a 30-metre safety zone on either side of the ROW to protect the pipeline, the environment and you. If you are planning to excavate or use explosives within the 30-metre safety zone, you must contact Enbridge first and obtain permission.
