Aboriginal and Native American people are important stakeholders in Enbridge's activities. Our relations with them are extensive and will grow as the company expands.

The goal of Enbridge's Aboriginal and Native American Policy is to help achieve mutually beneficial relations with Aboriginal and Native American communities in proximity to or, in some significant way, affected by our operations.

The terms “Aboriginal” and “Native American” are used to refer to the original inhabitants of Canada and the United States - those who lived in the area before other groups arrived from other parts of the world. In Canada, the term “Aboriginal” includes First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

Enbridge's policy lays out key principles for aboriginal relations, such as respect for traditional ways and land, heritage sites, the environment, and traditional knowledge. More generally, it promotes the understanding of, and sensitivity to, Aboriginal and Native American peoples and the issues important to them - all of which can and should result from sincere, ongoing dialogue with these communities.

Among other overarching objectives, the policy — and the guidelines that flow from it - are designed to ensure a consistent, thorough approach to consultation and engagement with Aboriginal and Native American people.

As part of its engagement strategy, Enbridge strives to create opportunities that are aligned with the Aboriginal or Native American community's aspirations. This will often lead to partnerships and sponsorship of educational and training programs, employment-opportunities initiatives and other capacity-building efforts.
