Excavation near the ROW

To protect public safety and reduce the risk of pipeline damage, landowners must contact us at least three working days before beginning an excavation within 30 metres of the pipeline. Trained Enbridge Pipelines staff, who can safely direct the activity, must supervise any excavation near the ROW.

The company will help avoid problems and delays by:

  • helping you obtain written permission for construction/excavation over Enbridge pipelines
  • locating and marking Enbridge pipelines
  • acquainting others with the 30-metre (100-feet) safety zone on either side of the ROW, and providing guidelines for excavation and blasting
  • ensuring an Enbridge Pipelines field representative is on site

Know the Ground Rules

If you plan on any activity on the ROW, you must consult Enbridge Pipelines before moving ahead. Approvals for some facilities may take longer, so plan ahead. This includes calling Enbridge Pipelines in advance when you need to:

  • operate non-agricultural heavy vehicles or equipment on the ROW where no roadway exists
  • install fence posts
  • excavate or use explosives
  • construct roads, paving, parking, driveways, ditches, railways, overhead or underground utilities
  • grade, deep subsoil or remove soil
  • encroach on the ROW with services or other utilities
  • berm over the ROW

The construction of buildings, foundations or stockpiling of materials is prohibited on the ROW. This list of activities is intended only as a guideline. If you are in doubt, please contact Enbridge Pipelines regarding your ROW questions.

Call Before You Dig

Sometimes work needs to be done on or near the pipeline. That's why Enbridge Pipelines offers "Call Before You Dig", a free pipeline location service. Within three working days of your request, an Enbridge Pipelines representative will be at your door, ready to mark the exact location of the line.

For installations across the ROW, written permission is required. Depending on the installation, approval could take up to 10 days. Either way, permission should be sought in advance.

Depending where you live, your call is either collect to Enbridge Pipelines, or toll-free to your local one-call system.
