Indigenous people are important stakeholders in Enbridge's activities. Our relations with indigenous peoples are extensive and will grow as the company expands.

The goal of Enbridge's Indigenous Peoples Policy is to help achieve mutually beneficial relations with indigenous communities in proximity to or, in some significant way, affected by our operations.

The term "indigenous peoples" is often used to refer to the original inhabitants of a country - those who lived in the area before other groups arrived from other parts of the world. In various parts of the world, indigenous peoples may be referred to as "native peoples", "native Americans", "aboriginal peoples" or "first nations."

Enbridge's policy lays out key principles for aboriginal relations, such as respect for traditional ways and land, heritage sites, the environment, and traditional knowledge. More generally, it promotes the understanding of, and sensitivity to, indigenous peoples and their issues - all of which can and should result from sincere, ongoing dialogue with aboriginal communities.

Among other overarching objectives, the policy — and the guidelines that flow from it - are designed to ensure a consistent, thorough approach to aboriginal consultation and engagement.

As part of its aboriginal engagement strategies, Enbridge strives to create opportunities that are aligned with the aboriginal community's aspirations. This will often lead to partnerships and sponsorship of educational and training programs, employment-opportunities initiatives and other capacity-building efforts.
