After more three decades in business, Matthew’s 100-percent Native-owned construction company has built up an impressive client list.
U.S. Department of the Interior. Army Corps of Engineers. Indian Health Service. Private companies, too.
“Enbridge is by far the safest and most meticulous company we have ever worked for, even more so than the Army Corps of Engineers,” says Matthew, an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, whose company is headquartered on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota.
“We’ve been working with Enbridge for the last five years, now. They’re very respectful. And regardless of the opposition, they are very environmentally friendly and professional,” he adds.
During the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission’s recent series of public hearings on Enbridge’s proposed Line 3 Replacement Project, Matthew turned out in support of the project in Bemidji.
The project would replace existing 34-inch-diameter pipe with new 36-inch pipe for 337 miles across northern Minnesota, using modern construction methods and employing the latest available high-strength steel and coating technology.
Safety is a core value at Enbridge, the very foundation of our business, and Matthew’s company—which performs underground, utility and general contracting—has seen that commitment up close.
“I’m 100 percent supportive of (Enbridge’s proposed Line 3 Replacement Project), and I know firsthand by working with Enbridge that they’re by far the most environmentally friendly private entity out there,” he says.
The $2.9-billion private investment, more than $2 billion of it in Minnesota, would create thousands of family-sustaining construction jobs, a ripple effect through economic spinoffs in right-of-way communities, and more long-term property tax revenue.
Jon, owner of a Duluth-based safety training company, testified during the Minnesota PUC’s Duluth hearing on the subject of Enbridge’s safety culture.
“We do a lot of safety training and safety work for a lot of companies . . . and we use Enbridge’s safety culture and Enbridge’s way of doing business as a benchmark for our other clients,” says Jon. “We can’t say enough about Enbridge’s safety culture, and the way they practice what they preach.
“They walk the walk; they talk the talk,” he adds. “By watching how Enbridge conducts themselves, and watching how they do their work, we’re in total support of the Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Project.”
