Giving more Ontarians an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy choice

Enbridge Gas Inc. to expand natural gas access via 27 community expansion projects in rural, northern and Indigenous communities

Greg Devries can continue developing that green thumb.

And close to 9,000 fellow Ontarians will retain a little more green of their own.

Today, Ontario’s provincial government announced the province’s Natural Gas Expansion Program—which will see 28 natural gas expansion projects bring affordable, reliable heat to another 8,750 Ontarians in 2021.

Cynthia Hansen, Enbridge’s Executive Vice President and President of Gas Distribution and Storage, joined Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Associate Minister of Energy Bill Walker and Minister of Infrastructure Laurie Scott to make the announcement. Enbridge Gas was awarded 27 of the projects—giving an estimated 8,200 new residential and commercial customers access to affordable natural gas through approximately 430 kilometres of new distribution pipelines.

Provincial businesses can save on energy costs. As owner of Cedarline Greenhouses in Dresden, ON, Devries can already attest to that.

“We’ve tapped into the natural gas infrastructure at our farms and have already seen the benefits to our bottom line. We have plans to expand our operation to include up to 30 acres of new greenhouses, and natural gas will help make that happen,” says Devries.

“We can continue to grow,” he adds, “knowing that we’ll have long-term access to this affordable energy source.”

Families who connect to the new natural gas service can save from 10% to 50% in annual energy costs, and improve quality of life, as they move away from more expensive fuel sources.

John Powell became a new Enbridge Gas customer in 2020 through the Scugog Island Community Expansion Project. “Throughout my 40 years in my home, I’ve had a range of fuels from electric to oil heating our home,” he says. “I read up on the benefits of natural gas, but even still was surprised by the cost savings I’ve experienced after one heating season.”

In addition to cost savings and unparalleled reliability, natural gas offers a more sustainable choice when switching from oil or propane for heat and water heat.

“These projects will bring much needed and wanted natural gas to additional communities while supporting jobs, helping to attract local investment, and providing energy savings to residents and businesses,” says Hansen.

“We are thrilled that the Government of Ontario selected these projects and look forward to working together with the province and local municipalities to continue to bring natural gas to more Ontario homes and businesses.”
