Line 9B Reversal and Line 9 Capacity Expansion Project

Return to project

Regulatory Information

The NEB previously approved Enbridge’s standalone application for the reversal of the section known as Line 9A, from Sarnia, Ont., to North Westover, Ont., in July 2012. Project work was completed in November 2013.

Enbridge filed a project application with the NEB for the section known as Line 9B in November 2012, proposing at the same time to expand the capacity of Line 9 from 240,000 bpd to 300,000 bpd. The Line 9B Reversal and Line 9 Capacity Expansion Project was approved by the NEB in March of 2014 with 30 conditions that reflected the input of interveners and stakeholders who participated in the consultation process.

As a result of that consultation and through our own initiatives, Enbridge has implemented operating policies and safety standards that exceed regulatory requirements. These actions include increasing the number of pipeline inspections, additional inspections at all water crossings, an increase to the number of intelligent remote-controlled valves, and more emergency response equipment along the ROW.

Enbridge has complied with all NEB conditions to date. Some conditions are ongoing and require regular reporting to regulatory agencies. We expect all NEB condition filings to be completed by February 2019.
