Our performance at a glance

Last year, Enbridge safely delivered billions of barrels of crude oil to North American refineries, where it was converted into the gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel that keep our society moving and our economy growing. We also moved more than 8.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, a key fuel to heat our homes, enable transportation and manufacturing, and energize our industrial sector. And we generated 1.75 gigawatts of renewable energy as part of the transition to a lower-carbon future.

In 2018, we safely transported nearly 3.9 billion barrels of oil, the highest volume in our 70-year history. Even with the record-setting volumes of oil transported, we drove our incident rate down, establishing a new safe delivery benchmark with a total of 206 barrels spilled in four incidents, three of which were contained on our property. Despite the strongest safety performance in our company’s history, we know that even one leak is too many. Our goal is to prevent all incidents and so, in addition to investigating every incident or near miss to identify and address its root causes, we invest in research and technology and engage every employee and contractor to build a stronger and more resilient company culture relentlessly focused on safety.

Record volumes shipped with record safety performance

In 2018, we delivered more oil than at any other time in our long history, and we did so more safely than ever. We transported a record volume of 3.87 billion barrels to market, a 3% increase over 2017 while at the same time establishing a new benchmark in safety performance. Our belief that every incident can be prevented drives this success, supported by billions of dollars spent to enhance the safety of our systems as well as programs, policies and procedures to reinforce a relentless focus on safety by every member of our team.

Natural Gas Transportation

In 2018 we transported more than 8.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas—an average of 24 billion cubic feet a day—and 95 million barrels of natural gas liquids. During that time we experienced 28 reportable leaks on our natural gas pipeline systems, and two pipeline ruptures which were quickly contained, fully investigated and repaired, and completely remediated.

Natural Gas Distribution

Our natural gas utility, which includes Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas, provides reliable natural gas service to more than 3.7 million customers in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and New York State. In 2018, we safely delivered more than 1.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to those customers and experienced five reportable natural gas releases.

By the Numbers

29,153

Last year we completed more than 29,150 pipeline inspections on our liquids and natural gas pipelines and distribution networks. This includes 358 inline inspections, nearly 2,500 preventive maintenance digs and more than 26,000 other assessments, including pressure tests, bridge, water crossing and slope inspections and examination of valves and other equipment.

C$1.3 M

In 2018 Enbridge gave more than C$1.3 million (US$1 million) through 304 grants to community first response agencies. Since we established our Safe Community program in 2002, we’ve provided more than C$13.3 million (US$10.6 million) in grants to help build safer communities across Canada and the U.S.

1,750 MW

Enbridge has been investing in zero-emission energy since 2002 and currently has about 1,750 MW of net renewable generation capacity, based on projects in operation or under construction, from its portfolio of onshore and offshore wind, solar and geothermal projects in North America and Europe.
