Mentorship, professional development and supporting success

Enbridge named for second straight year to Canada’s Top Employers for Young People list

Career advancement doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. Just ask Adam Pecush.

Based in Edmonton, Pecush is an integral member of an Enbridge team that helps to keep our crude oil pipelines healthy and fit for purpose. The native of Sherwood Park, AB, leads a group of dedicated professionals who manage in-line inspections—the regular examination of our pipe walls with electronic tools that use technology adapted from the medical industry.

And while he’s been in the energy industry for more than 10 years, he’s also tapping into another source of information and seasoned knowledge—through Enbridge’s company-wide mentorship program.

“I’ve been involved in the program for two years as a protégé, and I really appreciate having someone who can help direct my career progression,” says Pecush. “My mentor has been very supportive and encouraging . . . our regular conversations have helped me consider alternative solutions and viewpoints that I might not have arrived at on my own.

“In fact,” adds Pecush, “my mentor provided strong encouragement for me to enter my current position—which was considerably different from any of my previous roles.”

About 2,000 employees took part in Enbridge’s mentorship program in 2016 as either a mentor or protégé, and that’s part of the reason that Enbridge was named today, for the second straight year, to the nationwide list of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People.

The annual competition scrutinizes companies on their efforts to attract and retain younger workers, weighing programs and benefits such as:

  • Tuition assistance;
  • The availability of co-op or work study programs;
  • Mentorship and training opportunities, and associated benefits; and
  • Career management programs that can assist younger workers in advancing faster through their organization.

Enbridge’s mentorship program helps to expand professional networks, facilitates knowledge sharing, accelerates professional learning and supports career development.

The 2017 winners were announced today through a special section in the Globe and Mail. Organizers cited the following reasons for selecting Enbridge to this year’s list of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People:

  • Enbridge’s four-year professional development program for new engineering graduates that focuses on gas distribution engineering and operations;
  • Our mentorship program and our “reverse mentorship” initiative, which matches executives with millennials; and
  • Enbridge’s employee resource group for young professionals.

Emily Black, too, has benefited from Enbridge’s mentorship program over the past three years. A senior business development advisor, Black works with producers, marketers and end-users of natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) to create new opportunities to move these products to market.

“All of my mentors have provided me with helpful guidance on my professional development,” says Black, who hails from Harvey Station, NB. “These relationships have given me an impartial sounding board for bouncing ideas and receiving constructive feedback.”

Enbridge was previously named to the Canada’s Top Employers for Young People list in 2011. The full-fledged annual index debuted in 2009.
