We work with Indigenous groups and businesses so they can participate economically in our projects and operations.
Indigenous Nations, Tribes, governments, and groups
At Enbridge, we are committed to early engagement and meaningful dialogue with Indigenous peoples along our pipeline rights-of-way, based on mutual respect and trust.
Our approach to Indigenous relations in both the United States and Canada recognizes and respects the history, uniqueness and diversity of Indigenous peoples.
Enbridge's Indigenous Peoples Policy governs our interactions with Indigenous peoples. Enbridge's policy lays out principles for Indigenous relations, such as:
- Recognize the legal and constitutional rights possessed by Indigenous peoples, and the importance of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and their traditional lands and resources.
- Recognize the importance of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
- Engage early and sincerely through processes that aim to achieve the support and agreement of Indigenous nations and governments for our projects and operations that may occur on their traditional lands.
- Seek the input and knowledge of Indigenous groups to identify and develop appropriate measures to avoid and/or mitigate the impacts of our projects and operations that may occur on their traditional lands.
- Promote equity and inclusion.
- Foster awareness through education.
As part of our engagement strategy, Enbridge works with Indigenous Nations, Tribes, governments and groups to achieve common goals and constructive outcomes from our projects and operations. Our Indigenous Relations focus areas include:
- Building relationships through engagement with the Indigenous communities near our operating areas
- Creating partnerships to support investment in Indigenous communities
- Supporting employment and training programs
- Facilitating Indigenous economic engagement
In September 2022, we released our Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan (IRAP), which continues our long-held commitment to strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities across North America and advancing reconciliation. Our IRAP allows us to track our progress against tangible commitments, and in early 2025 we released our IRAP Refresh to report on our progress to date.
We are committed to forthright and sincere engagement with Indigenous Nations, Tribes, governments and groups.
