Safe Community First Responder Program

ENGLISH | FRANÇAIS

Small communities all across Canada and the U.S. rely on fire departments, ambulance services, and other emergency responders to keep them safe. Money is perennially tight, especially in rural municipalities with a small tax base, and equipment that could enhance the capabilities of these first responders is a luxury for some communities.

Recognizing that, in 2002 Enbridge launched its Safe Community First Responder program specifically for first responders providing safety along the company’s rights-of-way. The program awards grants for safety equipment, professional training, or safety education programs to emergency response organizations including fire departments, emergency medical and rescue services, emergency management organizations, 9-1-1 centers, ambulance services and law enforcement organizations. .

The safety of the communities near our projects and operations, and the people who live and work along our system, remain our highest priority. That’s why we’re proud to support the organizations that help keep communities safe.

Our Safe Community First Responder program expanded to Canada in 2009 and has invested about US$20 million (more than C$26.1 million) in North American emergency responder organizations since its inception—including US$1.56 million (C$2.11 million) to 193 emergency response organizations across North America in 2023.

To be eligible for a Safe Community First Responder grant, emergency response organizations must support communities within 10 miles (in the U.S.) or 20 kilometers (in Canada) of our operations. Organizations that closely meet eligibility criteria, have high potential impact for community safety and have a direct partnership with Enbridge may also be invited to apply for funding.

How to apply:

  1. Check Enbridge’s list of eligible communities in Canada and the United States to ensure your organization qualifies.
  2. Review the Enbridge Fueling Futures application guide to familiarize yourself with the process and the information required to complete the application.
  3. Complete the Enbridge Fueling Futures application form. Select “Safe Community First Responder Program” as the grant stream for your funding request.
