Net zero emissions by 2050

Climate change requires serious solutions. With assets across the energy system, we are well-positioned to adapt to the energy transition over time while continuing to provide the energy people need and want.

  • Achieve net zero emissions from our business by 2050
  • Reduce the intensity of GHG emissions from our operations by 35% by 2030

To meet our 2030 emission targets and our 2050 net-zero ambition, we’ll be pursuing multiple avenues that are strongly aligned and embedded in our strategy and business plans. These include:

  • Modernization, technology and innovation improvements applied to existing infrastructure to reduce emissions intensity
  • Building and operating renewable “self power” generation facilities to reduce emissions related to the energy consumed by operations
  • Gradual investment in low carbon projects and businesses
  • Purchasing and retaining renewable energy credits and selective investment in nature-based solutions and offsets

Environmental Targets

We significantly accelerated our strategy to adapt to energy transition over time with the 2017 acquisition of Spectra Energy Corp., the largest natural gas transmission network in the U.S., which materially shifted our business mix and the overall carbon intensity of the energy we deliver to meet the energy needs of millions of North Americans.

Implementing the new standard for system incidents

At Enbridge, safety is our top priority and a core value that shapes decision-making all the time, at every level. We are committed to keeping the public and the environment safe and ensuring every member of our team returns home safely at the end of every day.

We believe all injuries, incidents and occupational illnesses are preventable and we pursue continuous improvement towards our goal of zero incidents.

  • Implement new voluntary industry standard criteria for pipeline system safety performance enterprise-wide and establish 2021 baseline to set Business Unit targets for 2022 forward
