Called to serve
Enbridge Income Fund’s Schuldhaus named Honorary Colonel by 4 Wing Cold Lake unit
After five years of interfacing with the busiest fighter base in Canada, Perry Schuldhaus – make that Honorary Col. Perry Schuldhaus – has been called to serve.
Schuldhaus, president of Enbridge Income Fund Holdings Inc., has begun a three-year tenure as the Honorary Colonel of the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE), located at 4 Wing Cold Lake Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) base. An official investiture ceremony for Schuldhaus was held Friday afternoon in Cold Lake, Alta.
“I am truly humbled by this call to service,” Schuldhaus told an audience of AETE and 4 Wing personnel during Friday’s ceremony. “I will be proud to represent AETE, and to advocate for and assist the unit to the best of my ability. As Sir Winston Churchill told us: ‘You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.’ ”
While honorary and advisory in nature, this is far from a figurehead appointment. Schuldhaus will work behind the scenes to provide an essential connection between the Canadian Forces and the community, business and industry – promoting and sustaining strong community support for the unit, and maintaining a dialogue with the unit’s charities and non-profits.
AETE is the flight test agency for the Canadian Forces, providing engineering evaluations of the RCAF’s aerospace systems and all new equipment introduced to Canada’s air fleets. 4 Wing Cold Lake is an international center of excellence for tactical fighter operations and deployable combat support, and is the home of fighter pilot training for the Canadian Forces.
“It’s abundantly clear that Col. Schuldhaus has taken an active interest in what goes on here in Cold Lake, and is interested in supporting the activities of the men and women in uniform and their families,” says Col. Michael Barker, AETE’s commanding officer. “He’s got a wealth of skill and experience as a leader in industry, and he’ll play an integral role in our strategic initiatives over the next three years.
Enbridge’s relationship with 4 Wing, and the Cold Lake region, dates back to 1999, with the construction of our Athabasca Pipeline. Regional projects in motion include the Athabasca Pipeline Twinning Project and the Wood Buffalo Pipeline Extension Project, both expected to enter service in 2017.
We’re committed to enhancing the quality of life in the communities near our pipelines and facilities, and in the Cold Lake area, that includes:
- Sponsorship of 4 Wing’s Art Smith Aviation Academy, a not-for-profit private school that focuses on the specialized needs of military dependents;
- Sponsorship of 4 Wing’s 60th anniversary gala dinner, held in 2014;
- Supporting construction of a splash park accessible to both military personnel and community members, whose grand opening is anticipated in summer 2016;
- Support of community initiatives like the Cold Lake Public Library’s outdoor reading garden.
Schuldhaus’s interactions with 4 Wing began in 2010, as he helped develop a mutual understanding of respective operations and conveyed Enbridge’s long-term plans for additional pipelines across the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range.
“I greatly value the constructive relationships that have been formed with the personnel at 4 Wing,” said Schuldhaus. “I look forward to bringing my civilian perspective, as well as my years of engineering, business development and leadership experience, to this advisory role.”
