Enbridge responds to incident at pump station near Herschel, Saskatchewan

All free-standing oil from a release that occurred at Enbridge’s Herschel, Saskatchewan Mainline pump station on Thursday, April 30, has been recovered and sent to registered waste treatment facilities as of Sunday, May 3, at 5 pm (MST).

We have also removed most of the visibly impacted soil, both offsite and from within the Herschel station. Third-party environmental sampling is ongoing and Enbridge will continue to focus on recovering the remaining impacted soil. The release is estimated at 150 cubic metres.

The Canada Energy Regulator has completed an onsite inspection over the weekend. There were no safety or environmental incidents during the response and clean-up activities.

Enbridge is responding to an incident that occurred on Thursday, April 30, at its Mainline pump station near Herschel, Saskatchewan, involving an oil release of an estimated 150 cubic meters. The majority of oil was released inside the pump station fence line. An estimated 20 cubic meters migrated offsite and was contained in a ditch.

As of 2 pm Friday, May 1, all of the standing oil offsite has been recovered and we are anticipate removing all of the impacted soil in the ditch by the end of the day. Cleanup activities will continue throughout the weekend as our focus shifts to cleanup within the Herschel pump station.

Mainline deliveries were not impacted by the incident and no landowners were affected. The Canada Energy Regulator was onsite Friday afternoon to complete an inspection. An Enbridge internal investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and we continue to cooperate fully with authorities in our response activities.

The majority of oil was released inside the pump station fence line. An estimated 20 cubic meters migrated offsite and has been contained in a ditch. The release was discovered by Enbridge personnel.

The source of the release was a pipeline connection within the pump station fence line, which has now been isolated. Crews are onsite, cleanup has been initiated, and no landowners are affected. There are no immediate safety concerns and we are cooperating fully with authorities in our response.
