Favorable decision for Line 5 in Wisconsin District Court
March 02, 2026
We’re pleased the court agreed that shutting down Line 5 before a decision from the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals would unnecessarily and unfairly harm millions of people in the Midwest and Great Lakes Regions by cutting off or severely disrupting their access to affordable energy.
The decision late last week from Wisconsin District Court Judge Conley stops enforcement of the June 2026 shutdown order until the Seventh Circuit issues a ruling on the parties’ appeals of the District Court’s June 2023 decision.
Both Enbridge and the Bad River Band appealed aspects of that decision, and oral arguments were heard before the Seventh Circuit in 2024. Both parties are awaiting a decision.
Enbridge continues construction activities for the L5 Wisconsin Segment Relocation Project while we await future decisions.
Line 5 is critical energy infrastructure, serving 10 refineries and propane production facilities—and continues to operate safely and reliably delivering affordable energy to the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. Line 5 fully complies with Pipeline Safety Act and PHMSA safety standards.
