Vacant Enbridge-owned land in Chilliwack to be transformed into a community playground

A vacant lot on Crestwood Drive in Chilliwack, BC won’t sit empty for much longer. In just a few weeks, this piece of land will be filled with children’s laughter, as a new community playground will be built on site.

The City of Chilliwack, in partnership with Enbridge—an energy infrastructure company which owns the vacant land—will transform the unused site into a playground for children of all ages.

The area around Crestwood Drive has seen significant residential growth in recent years and was identified as needing more accessible green and outdoor recreation space for its residents. This project is part of the city’s Greenspace Plan, which aims to expand and improve access to parks and outdoor recreational facilities across Chilliwack.

“With the help of Enbridge, we are excited to be able to offer the families in the area a new place to play,” said Mayor Ken Popove. “We are proud to partner with Enbridge on this project, as we work together to offer more opportunities for safe and inclusive outdoor play.”

The new playground will include a mix of play features, with slides, climbing structures and a swing. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the playground will be accessible to children of all abilities and will offer a safe, welcoming environment for families to enjoy the outdoors together.

“We are honoured to collaborate with the City of Chilliwack on this project,” says Sarah Taylor, a regional operations training advisor at Enbridge, who played a key role in bringing this project to life. “Converting this vacant lot into a safe and welcoming playground for children and families to use reflects what we value at Enbridge—being a good neighbour and making a lasting, positive impact in the communities where we live and work.”

Enbridge operates a natural gas pipeline system in the area, delivering the safe, reliable energy that heats homes, businesses, hospitals and schools. Natural gas is also used in electrical power generation and fuels industries that produce hundreds of products that improve our lives.

Installation of the playground is scheduled to begin in May, with target completion by June. Once completed, the new playground will serve as a cornerstone of the neighbourhood—a place for fun, connection and community spirit.
