Duke’s natural gas spinoff spawns Spectra Energy

Spectra Energy was created as a stand-alone company on Jan. 1, 2007, consisting of Duke Energy’s natural gas business. Foundational Spectra assets included the Texas Eastern, Algonquin, Maritimes & Northeast, East Tennessee and Westcoast transmission systems, the Union Gas utility, and DCP Midstream gathering and processing—all of which are now Enbridge affiliates following the 2017 merger between Enbridge and Spectra. Greg Ebel, who became President and CEO of Spectra in 2009, took Enbridge’s helm in the same capacity on Jan. 1, 2023 after chairing our Board of Directors for six years.
