Protecting cultural resources in the Straits

The Straits of Mackinac hold great spiritual significance to the Anishinaabe people. As Enbridge performs a marine archaeological survey of the Straits for the Great Lakes Tunnel Project, Native American-owned consultancy 7th Legacy LLC has established onshore, direct-feed TV monitors so Tribal members can see survey work being done in real time and ask questions. “The tunnel project is really unique, because of the transparency in monitoring,” says Amanda, an underwater archaeologist leading the survey. “Enbridge has really embraced the idea of identifying and protecting cultural resources and making sure they’re not impacted.”
