‘Years in the making’: Removing an important spawning barrier

Bayfield County has had its eye on a culvert replacement in northern Wisconsin for years—a culvert on Campbells Creek that has hindered access to an important coldwater spawning habitat for brook trout. With help from Enbridge’s Ecofootprint Grant program, the culvert has now been replaced, enabling easier trout movement, slower water runoff and safer road traffic above. “Pretty amazing, because it’s been years in the making,” says Ben, a conservationist with the county. “Enbridge has been partnering with us for years on conservation work. It feels like a job well done—a success story for the Cranberry River system.”
