‘This is home. This is where I choose to be’

Bob, Enbridge’s area operations manager in northern Michigan, is a Yooper—that is, a native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—and a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. “My whole life, I’ve been drawn to the water. It’s my calming place . . . you can feel the spirit of the (Great) Lakes,” he says. Bob discusses the multiple safeguards put in place by Enbridge to protect the Line 5 Straits of Mackinac crossing, and the Great Lakes Tunnel that will be built to house a replacement segment of Line 5. “My family lives all through the eastern Upper Peninsula. If I didn’t feel like this was safe, I couldn’t do it,” he says.
