‘We had eyes on every part of that survey’
Construction has begun on the Enbridge’s Line 5 Wisconsin Segment Relocation Project, which has already undergone an extensive cultural resources survey along the right-of-way, conducted by an independent Tribal monitoring team and archaeologists. “We participated in that (survey) from beginning to end. That was amazing. A great learning experience,” recalls Valerie of B&W Services, who is a Bad River Band member. “We had eyes on every part of that survey. It was empowering. It felt good.” An Indigenous perspective is vital to any cultural resources survey, says Jim, project manager with Dirt Divers CRM. “People are tied. It’s deeply rooted within them, like the roots of these trees around us,” says Jim.
