‘Cool technology’ that examines our pipes from the inside out

At Enbridge, we focus heavily on prevention to keep our pipeline networks safe, and in-line inspection (ILI) tools are a key component of our aggressive prevention program. These complex robots use advanced imaging or ultrasound technology to inspect our pipes inch by inch, and offer pinpoint accuracy for features that may require follow-up maintenance. Enbridge recently hosted a safety open house at our Superior, WI pipeline maintenance shop, with a 36-foot-long ultrasonic crack detection tool on display, among other safety equipment. “It’s got a lot of components to it—batteries, electronics, a GPS system, and multiple sensors,” notes Ryan, a manager of pipeline integrity planning with Enbridge. “The amount of information we can get from them is amazing.”
