Do old pipelines need to be replaced?

Pipes are made from the highest-quality steel and have an indefinite lifespan if they are monitored and properly maintained. We monitor our pipes 24/7 and have an extensive preventative maintenance and inspection program for our entire system.

The age of a pipe is only one factor in our assessment of Enbridge’s pipelines. An older pipe does not necessarily mean there will be more problems. In fact, some of our oldest pipes are the ones with the lowest number of reported anomalies.

Each pipeline is examined on a case-by-case basis. Pipelines, like all infrastructure, age at different rates due to environment, general use and other factors. That is why there is no blanket approach to how we manage and maintain our pipeline infrastructure.

In 2013, U.S. National Transportation Safety Board chairwoman Deborah Hersman testified before the Senate Commerce Committee: “If (a pipeline) is adequately maintained and inspected, age is not an issue.”
