Isn't diluted bitumen (dilbit) from Canada's oil sands corrosive?

We have been transporting crude oil from Canada’s oil sands region since 1968. There is nothing new about transporting this form of crude oil, otherwise known as diluted bitumen or dilbit.

Independent scientific studies report, unequivocally, that product from the Canadian oil sands has no internal corrosivity risk.

But don’t take our word for it—here are links to the reports themselves, produced by:

  • National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences;
  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCan);
  • Penspen Integrity

We wouldn’t risk our infrastructure investment if it did—and we’ve never experienced an internal corrosion failure on our Mainline pipeline system.
