Sponsors second propane giveaway

It’s time to fire up the grills, which is why local vendors and Enbridge recently teamed up for the second time to kick off the unofficial launch of summer with a propane giveaway.

Complete with music, a live radio broadcast and snacks from local eateries, the two-day celebration started May 25 in St. Ignace and wrapped up on May 26 in Cheboygan.

Approximately 115 area residents brought their empty propane canisters on May 25 to the Blarney Castle, a BP gas station to receive a complimentary propane refill—amounting to nearly 550 gallons of propane in total.

“This is a chance to partner with local businesses to help Michiganders safely kickoff the summer,” said Emma Cook, Enbridge community engagement analyst.  “We work with community and business partners throughout the year, though there always is extra excitement in the air when we get to help celebrate summertime in Michigan.”

Collaboration is the key

Enbridge collaborated with the Blarney Castle BP station in St. Ignace and Dave’s Place in Cheboygan to host the propane giveaways.

Massey’s Fish Market provided refreshments for the first day’s event, and Up North Family Bakery in Cheboygan provided ready-to-eat potpies for guests at the May 26 event.

“These are great events that connect communities and vendors while underscoring the significance of how Line 5 plays a role in most of what each of us does each day,” said Cook.  “Propane from Line 5 meets more than half the demand of in the U.P. and helps keeps homes warm on those cold Michigan days, but it also is critical to enjoying our great state in the summer.”

Great Lakes Tunnel will keep propane flowing long term

For Michigan communities and businesses to continue to receive the benefits of Line 5 well beyond summer, Enbridge is planning to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel Project.

“In addition to propane, Line 5 transports the light crude oil that area refineries use to help manufacture everything from fuel for our vehicles to the vehicles themselves,” said Cook.  “Line 5 is vital to the region, and by encasing a replacement section of Line 5 deep below the lakebed in a tunnel, we essentially are eliminating the chance of an anchor strike or spill in the Straits.  It’s the next logical measure to making a safe pipeline even safer.”

Enbridge is investing $500 million to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel Project.  In addition to Line 5, other utilities, such as those that provide fiber optic cable, could use the Tunnel.
