Sharing our energy: Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2021

Enbridge employees have a long history of giving back to the community

Volunteer. It’s another word for “energy” at Enbridge.

Volunteers are difference makers and are important to improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods and communities where we live and work.

The Enbridge teams joins with organizations throughout Canada and the U.S. to celebrate National Volunteer Week, which takes place this year from April 18 to 24, to recognize the efforts of volunteers everywhere and the extraordinary impact of volunteerism in our communities and in our society. Passionate volunteers like Somto Ibe.

Ibe is an integrity engineer who works for Enbridge in Calgary. A chemical engineer by training, Ibe volunteers with a number of organizations including the Calgary chapter of BrainSTEM Alliance.

“Growing up in Nigeria, I didn’t have many black female role models growing up that were engineers,” says Ibe. “I realized I could be that person for other young women. I recently volunteered at a two-day STEM workshop for girls. It was gratifying to hear from a mother after the camp about the change she saw in her daughter. The workshop awoke an interest in science and technology, and planted the possibility of a career in STEM.”

Enbridge and our employees have a long history of giving back to their communities—it’s simply part of who we are.

“Earlier this year, we launched Enbridge Fueling Futures, which outlines our approach to corporate citizenship and includes a new, flexible employee volunteering and giving program,” says Gina Jordan, Manager of Corporate Citizenship. “I am so pleased to see tremendous employee response to the program and the breadth of employee volunteering and giving at Enbridge. Employees are able to leverage the program to amplify their charitable efforts making an even bigger impact for the causes they care about, all the while contributing to safe, vibrant and sustainable communities for everyone.”

An important aspect of the Enbridge Fueling Futures program is the Volunteer Ambassador Network, which supports a transformational approach to volunteering. More than 140 Enbridge employees have signed up to lead and champion volunteerism within the company, including Ibe. She joined the network to help her colleagues get more engaged in volunteering and experience the personal rewards of giving back.

“Once you volunteer, you understand how rewarding it can be, and what a positive impact we can have on other’s lives,” says Ibe.

Volunteers are an important part of keeping our communities strong, especially during challenging times. Sharing our energy and compassion is part of living our values of safety, integrity, respect and inclusion, and something we celebrate every day at Enbridge.

This National Volunteer Week, take a moment to recognize and say thank you to a volunteer who inspires you, or share some of your energy through an act of kindness or a gift of your time and talents to a local cause you care about.
