‘Inclusion begets diversity, and diversity begets a thriving team’

Celebrating accomplishments, committing to change on International Women’s Day

It’s a time to celebrate the accomplishments of women in our society.

At Enbridge, we’re taking time to acknowledge the accomplishments of women across our North American workforce—and reaffirm our company’s diversity and inclusion goals.

Today is International Women’s Day, with its Break the Bias theme challenging us to take ownership of our thoughts and actions, and work toward a more equitable society. March is also Women’s History Month in the United States; the 2022 theme Providing Healing, Promoting Hope pays tribute to caregivers and frontline workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and recognizes the ways women have provided healing and hope throughout history.

“My experience as a woman in the energy industry today is different from when I started my career 20 years ago. While there are still some occasions where I am the only female in the room, it is a stark contrast to when I began. As a gas plant operator, I was one of three females in a plant of over 250,” remarks Jenn Pound, a business process manager in Enbridge’s enterprise asset management group.

“I’ve learned to speak up both in my work and when things are not right. I am proud to be at Enbridge. The work we are doing today will continue to improve and challenge inequities, and the courage we have to measure that movement is proof of the commitment to change.”

Today, on International Women’s Day, Enbridge is sponsoring a Walrus Leadership Forum event, presented by YW Calgary, on the state of the “she-covery”—celebrating the political, economic, and social successes achieved by women, and delving into the work that is still left to be done. The event begins at 2 p.m. ET/12 p.m. MT; registration is free.

As part of our company-wide sustainability goals, Enbridge is targeting 40% female representation in our workforce by 2025, along with other equitable representation targets for people of color, people with disabilities, and veterans.

All Enbridge employees have taken unconscious bias and anti-racism training, and our Employee Resource Groups provide support by bringing people together in the workplace based on shared characteristics or life experiences.

“My experience as a woman in engineering has been very positive and rewarding. Yet, there have been situations where I have felt like an outsider, which comes with significant burden and robs valuable energy. I’ve come to understand that inclusion begets diversity and diversity begets a thriving team, a positive environment, and creative solutions,” says Maja Nisbet, a supervisor of Enbridge’s pipeline integrity monitoring programs.
