Safety should come first
Practice safe digging in April and beyond
April 30, 2025
"Out of sight, out of mind" might be true for some things, but that kind of attitude can pose very real challenges, even dangers, when it comes to not knowing or understanding what's underground.
Across North America, people engage in digging for various projects, and it’s easy to overlook the risks.
“Not knowing or ignoring what is underground can be dangerous,” said Kirstie Staelens, Enbridge’s senior advisor for community engagement in Michigan.
“Beneath our feet, there’s a whole world of pipelines, cables, and other utilities. Even though we rely on them every day to provide our power, our clean water and take away our waste, heat and fuel, we often forget about them.”
That’s why every April calls attention to safe digging and the need to call 811 before planned activities.
“We have a diligent maintenance program underway that keeps Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac operating safely,” said Staelens.
“Whether planting new garden beds, trenches or a swimming pool, we encourage others to join us in being proactive with safety year-round.”
