Sustainability: Our performance

Sustainability is foundational to our business at Enbridge.

In late 2020, we set ambitious goals across all aspects of environment, social and governance performance. We established specific plans across businesses, aligned our compensation to our GHG emissions intensity performance, and focused on executing strategies that will position our company to grow sustainably for many decades to come.

We are proud of our sustainability practices and performance and through our annual sustainability reporting, we share progress against our sustainability goals, report on priority topics and detail our efforts to safely provide the energy people need while advancing solutions for tomorrow.

Selected updates on key sustainability metrics for 2024 are below. Read the 2024 Sustainability Report and review our Datasheet for further information about our sustainability performance.

2024 Sustainability Performance

  • We continue to focus on reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity from our operations. In 2024 we achieved a 40% reduction from our baseline year of 2018,1,2 exceeding our target of 35%. We remain focused on maintaining our emissions intensity reductions as we grow our business.
  • Achieved a 22% reduction in absolute GHG emissions from operations, from our baseline year of 2018. 1,3
  • Our 2024 methane emissions increased by 32% from our 2018 baseline. This significant increase is primarily due to the acquisition of three new U.S. gas utilities over the past year. As we integrate these operations, we are working closely with our U.S. gas utility teams to assess current practices and develop a path forward. We are focused on advancing methane reductions across our expanded footprint and will share further details about our strategy and progress in our next report.
  • Strengthened safety performance with a 23% reduction in total recordable injury frequency (TRIF) among employees and contractors (excluding U.S. utilities), surpassing the three-year average and exceeding our goal of 10% TRIF improvement. Despite these improvements, we are deeply saddened by the loss of a contractor in 2024. This tragedy deepened our resolve to do everything possible to prevent events like this in the future.
  • Continued progress on commitments made in our Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan, meeting 12 of the 22 commitments outlined in our plan. We published a refreshed IRAP earlier this year to renew and refresh our commitments.

Through our sustainability reporting, we strive to respond to our stakeholders’ information needs and to hold ourselves accountable for our performance and commitment to continually improve. Read Enbridge’s 2024 Sustainability Report and review our 2024 datasheet.

1 GHG emissions are from assets over which we have operational control (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions). Projected reductions of GHG emissions intensity and absolute emissions are relative to the 2018 baseline year.
2 This metric aggregates emissions and throughput for each business unit on the basis of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per energy delivered in petajoules (PJ).
3 Absolute emissions.
