Sustainability: Our commitment
Our commitment to sustainability underpins our vision—to provide energy in a more planet-friendly way, everywhere people need it.
Our focus on environmental responsibility, safe operations, workforce well-being, and responsible conduct helps us achieve our strategic priorities and adapt to a changing world.
For 25 years, we’ve provided an annual update on priority sustainability topics across our business, including our impact on the environment and the communities where we operate, and our role in society. We continue to advance our strategic priorities by integrating sustainability considerations into our business and focusing on long-term value creation for all our stakeholders.
Our approach is supported by external benchmarks and recognition, including our inclusion in the Dow Jones Best-in-Class North America Index and the Dow Jones Best-in-Class World Index. Enbridge was also recognized by S&P Global for 25 years of participation in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment, reinforcing our long-standing commitment to transparent reporting.
While we have made progress toward the sustainability goals we set in 2020, we know we have more work to do.
Sustainability goals:
- Reduce GHG emissions intensity from our operations by 35% by 2030.1,2,3
- Achieve net-zero GHG emissions from our operations by 2050.1,2,4
- Achieve a 10% improvement over the previous 3-year average Total Recordable Incident Frequency (TRIF) rate for employees and contractors.
- Implement a new voluntary industry standard for pipeline system safety performance and establish a baseline to guide business units in setting targets.
- Foster an inclusive, high-performance workforce, within initiatives intended to better reflect the communities where we operate and supports business outcomes.5
- Contribute to Indigenous reconciliation, including building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities and offering Indigenous cultural awareness training.
- Increase procurement from, and number of, qualified and competitive certified inclusive suppliers.
- Enhance cyber security programs to protect information and services.
- Maintain a Board composition that reflects a range of skills, experiences and perspectives.
- Report in alignment with widely used sustainability disclosure frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD, IPIECA) and continue to evolve with best practice.
Our sustainable business strategy is intended to support long-term business resilience and growth. We strive to meet growing global energy demand while advancing lower-emissions energy options and pursuing operational efficiencies, alongside our ongoing commitments to safety, environmental protection, and strong governance practices.
1 Our target covers 100% of our reported Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
2 GHG emissions included within our targets are from assets over which we have operational control (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions). Projected reductions of GHG emissions intensity and absolute emissions are relative to the 2018 baseline year. For more information, see our 2025 Sustainability Report.
3 This metric aggregates emissions and throughput for each business unit on the basis of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per energy delivered in petajoules (PJ).
4 Absolute emissions; our net-zero ambition is forward-looking and depends on evolving technology, public policy and economic developments.
5 All percentages or specific goals regarding inclusion are aspirational goals which we intend to achieve in a manner compliant with state, local, provincial and federal law, including, but not limited to, executive orders, US federal regulations, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Department of Labor guidance.
