Medicines & medical equipment depend on Line 5

February 15, 2023

February marks National Heart Month.

Statistics shared by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about heart attaches are downright scary.

According to the public health agency, someone in the United States has a heart attack every 40 seconds.

The CDC emphasizes prevention actions, including:

  • Stop smoking.
  • Get moving.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity each day.
  • Eat a heart-healthy diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage stress.
  • Get regular health screenings.

Line 5 plays a pivotal role in staying healthy

Besides prevention, medicines and medical equipment can play a critical role in having a healthy heart.

Oil from Line 5 is the basis for a variety of medicines as well as lifesaving medical equipment.

“Our hearts require care every day,” said Mike Moeller, Enbridge’s director of the Great Lakes Region. “We are proud that Enbridge Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac has a significant role in helping people to care for their hearts.”

Moeller explains that medicines and emergency and diagnostic equipment ─ such as defibrillators used to restore a normal heartbeat and the electrocardiograms that record the heart’s electrical impulses ─ are manufactured in part from the light crude oil and natural gas liquids Line 5 transports safely each day.

“Most people do not connect Line 5 to the role it plays in the health of Michiganders,” said Moeller.

“In addition to the diagnostic equipment and fuel for the vehicles that respond to medical emergencies, Line 5 is also pivotal to the manufacture of the bikes, treadmills and other exercise equipment that enable us to get the CDC-recommended exercise.”
