Enbridge aims to own interests in more than 11 Bcf/d of long-haul Permian natural gas egress capacity by mid-2028
Just 18 months after entering the West Texas natural gas picture, Enbridge continues its Permian pipeline push.
Today, Enbridge and partners WhiteWater, MPLX LP and ONEOK Inc. announced capacity expansion of the Eiger Express Pipeline from 2.5 to 3.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d), after originally unveiling the 450-mile transmission line from the Permian Basin to Katy, TX in late August.
Earlier in August, Enbridge and partners upsized capacity of the 160-mile, bidirectional Traverse Pipeline, traveling between Katy and Agua Dulce, TX, from 1.75 to 2.5 Bcf/d due to strong customer demand.
And that announcement followed on the heels of Enbridge news in May that we had acquired a 10% equity interest in the operational 580-mile Matterhorn Express Pipeline, which can deliver up to 2.5 Bcf/d of gas from the Permian to Wharton, TX, with additional delivery capability to the Katy area.
"You rarely see the scope of projects change drastically after they’re announced. Today’s announcement speaks to the record demand we are seeing for firm takeaway capacity in the Permian, and I’m proud to see our joint venture continue to win these contracts."

on the upsizing of the proposed Eiger Express Pipeline in Texas
“We’re really pleased with how our investment in and our joint venture with WhiteWater has gone,” said Cynthia Hansen, Enbridge’s Executive Vice President and President of our Gas Transmission business, during our 2025 second-quarter financial earnings call.
“There has been, obviously, some upside since the original” JV announcement with WhiteWater in March 2024.
The Eiger Express line will follow the Matterhorn right-of-way and is expected to enter service in mid-2028. At that point, Enbridge expects to own a meaningful equity interest in more than 11 Bcf/d of long-haul Permian egress pipeline capacity that’s connected to key storage facilities and LNG export hubs along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
In addition to Eiger Express, Matterhorn Express and Traverse, Enbridge has held ownership interests in a growing portfolio of Permian gas assets since spring 2024, through various partnerships:
“What we’ve loved about those assets is, they do tie to our existing footprint, the header system that we have with TETCO (Texas Eastern Transmission) and of course, Tres Palacios storage,” said Ms. Hansen. “So, yes, we would look at all opportunities to expand to meet those volumes—and continue to see a lot of opportunities on a go-forward basis.”
The Eiger Express sanctioning news was confirmed Nov. 7 during our 2025 third-quarter financial earnings call. Eiger Express is backed by long-term contracts with predominantly investment grade counterparties.
"What we’ve loved about those assets is, they do tie to our existing footprint, the header system that we have with TETCO (Texas Eastern Transmission) and of course, Tres Palacios storage . . . We would look at all opportunities to expand to meet those volumes—and continue to see a lot of opportunities on a go-forward basis."
